Vincent Van Gogh Birthday

Please see below a variety of resources / websites / activities that can be used should your child be self isolating during this time. Please still encourage reading at home as much as possible. Every child has been issued with a Purple Mash login which can be accessed at home and contains lots of activities across much of the curriculum. We have recently been studying The Bog Baby story. Children know the story very well and should now begin to plan and create their own story based on a mini creature. Here are some suggested lessons: 


Week 1 

Lesson 1 - Children to create their own mini creature. They could draw a picture of it and use sentences to describe what it looks like, where it lives, how they discovered it, how it moves, what noises it makes, etc... 


Lesson 2 - Create a plan for their story. What is going to happen in each part their story? 

Part 1 - Introduce characters and where they live.

Part 2 - The characters go on a journey somewhere and find a creature. 

Part 3 - They take the creature home. What happens to the creature at their home? 

Part 4 - There is a problem with the creature. Maybe it gets sick or misses its habitat/home. 

Part 5 - The characters take the creature back to its habitat. How do all the characters and creature feel about this? 


Lesson 3 and 4 - Write their stories

Give children a checklist. Have they used:

Full stops, capital letters, question marks and exclamation marks correctly. 

Adjectives to describe characters and settings.

Interesting verbs to describe what the characters are doing. 

Paragraphs for different parts of the story. 

Different sentence openers to make their sentences interesting. 

The past tense.

The third person (he, she, they, their, etc...) 



Use suffixes (-ed, -ing, -ly, -ment, etc...) 

Edit work to make it better or to correct mistakes.

Here is also a link to past SATs papers in Maths. Year 2 children usually have to complete an arithmetic and reasoning paper. SATs are cancelled this year due to the coronavirus outbreak but the questions demonstrate what children are expected to achieve at the end of Year 2 in maths. 



Yoga and Well Being



Children have been studying materials. This is a very fun topic to do at home. Children could use materials around the home to see if: 

They float or not

They are good at insulating warm water. 

They are waterproof or absorb liquids

They are magnetic (if you have a magnet) 

They are transparent or not. 

They are flexible or rigid. 

They can be moulded into different shapes. Do they keep their shape well? 


You could also observe how chocolate melts when it is heated up and then become solid again when it is cooled or how water turns to ice when it is put in a freezer but will turn back to liquid when the temperature is warmer.

In Year 2, we have been comparing parts of the world to where we live. Click on the links below for lesson ideas and some free resources. 


Design Technology

Children have been designing and creating their own playgrounds. Encourage your children to use Lego, other building materials and to recycle objects from around the home to create swings, slides, roundabouts, etc... They could also write suggestions to improve their models and draw pictures of their playgrounds. 



Children have all been given a username and password to login to Charanga. There are lots of songs and fun activities to learn about aspects of music at home.
