Peace

This half term our RE unit will help children to understand the deeper meaning of the value of peace. Children will explore, describe, explain and illustrate the meaning of peace.

What is peace? Why is peace important?

Ascension and Pentecost

This half term Year 2 will be listening to the stories of Ascension and Pentecost, exploring the symbolism and power of the Holy Spirit and looking at pieces of artwork that interpret these events.

We begun by thinking about and discussing the feelings associated with saying goodbye to people. We used the story of 'Badger's parting gift' to help us understand that goodbye can be communicated in many ways.

Badger is so old that he knows he will soon die. He tries to prepare his friends for this event, but when he does die, they are still grief-stricken. Gradually they come to terms with their grief by remembering all the practical things Badger taught them, and so Badger lives on in his friends' memories of him.

We have been looking at the events of the Resurrection, through Bible verses and artwork. We discussed how the artists had interpreted these events. Take a look at the images below and see if you can interpret and order these events.

Easter symbols

This half term we will be exploring Easter symbols – The Paschal candle, the cross and the bread and wine, looking at the difference between secular popular Easter images and Christian symbols that have a deeper meaning and also exploring how the Church celebrates Easter.

Why is Easter an important festival in the Christian calendar?

We enjoyed some symbolic Easter food - hot cross buns and chocolate eggs! We discussed the symbolism of the food, of the sacrifice of Jesus and new life that followed.

Christmas Good News

This half term we are looking at how we send and receive good news and its impact on the world - we even have a good news board in class. We will be discussing angels and looking at artwork used to represent them. We will also listen to the Christmas story from different perspectives.

Why was the birth of Jesus good news? Who shares good news?

The Bible

During this term we will have the opportunity to look at and handle many different Bibles. We will also hear stories from both Testaments and look at the Bible as a library.

Why is the Bible special? What is your special book?

The children in Year 2 brought in their special book to share with the class. We discussed why our books are special and what we do to take care of them.

We read the story of Mary Jones, a young girl who saved for six years and walked twenty-five miles to own a Bible in her own language. We discussed why she made such an effort to get her own Bible and thought about how and where we could get a Bible. Read her story here:
