Hooray for Arrays!
Arrays help children to understand multiplication and division. For example, we can work out how many windows are in the building by multiplying the numbers of windows going along and up the building. In the picture above there are 24 windows (6 x 4 = 24). We can also show division. For example we can put the 6 eggs into 2 groups which would mean that there are 3 in each group (6 ÷ 2 = 3) or we can put 6 eggs into 3 groups which would mean that there are 2 eggs in each group (6 ÷ 3 = 2).
