50 States of America

Big Idea

4th of July in the 18th Century saw 13 colonies of Great Britain declare independence of a nation called the United States of America. During the 19th and 20th Century a further 37 new states were added and the nation expanded across the North America continent. 50 stars upon the American flag represent these 50 states.

We linked Maths and Geography together to explore angles which create our longitude and latitude lines - we used this paper plate as a representative model. We then used this knowledge to locate states on a map using longitude and latitude lines.
